Demonstration
The Ice Cream Vendor
This is a scene from Jack Darling park, a popular
spot on the waterfront. In this demo, we'll discuss
among other things, working from photos, the
dynamics of underpainting, and working with a
painting knife.
Using Photos
Setting up your easel outside and painting direct
from nature ('en plein air') is a nice idea, and well
worth trying now and then. With my typical
subject matter however, I'm likely to get beat up
or run over. So learning to work from photos is
necessity for me. The thing is- fate seldom
delivers all the necessary ingredients in one photo.
So, I take LOTS of pictures (with digital, there's
no reason not to), and build my composition from
a selection of shots.
Here, a couple are obsuring the view of the ice
cream cart so I will substitute the grouping in the
lower shot. The kid with the soccer ball appears
in both shots - but that's OK by me.
