Strong primary colours, especially warm colours, tend to ‘come forward’ in a
painting. As do strong contrasts. Cool, neutral colours tend to recede. A
common device to create the illusion of depth in a painting therefore, is to keep
strong warm colours and high contrast in the foreground and paint distant
