Another device is to use your brushwork
to support the illusion of depth. Big bold
strokes will come forward. More subtle
brushwork will recede. Once again, if the
objective is to flatten the depth of field –
do the opposite. Here, the same
brushwork used by Cezanne to paint his
beloved Monte Sainte-Victoire is also
applied to the sky, fields and trees that
surround it. The effect is to emphasize the
geometric shapes that recur throughout
the piece.
