The Influence of Photography 2
But the camera also influenced composition,
and artist’s attitudes about composition.
Previously, all paintings were actively
‘composed’, Even in landscapes, artists would
move to tree here or a mountain there, to
achieve the composition the required. Early
photographs were carefully orchestrated
also. Pretty soon however, people were
being introduced to the candid snapshot and
the impact on painters was significant.
Compositions became looser, and arms and
legs got cropped at random. Even the idea
of ‘composing’ a picture became somehow
suspect. The influence of candid
photography is evident in this picture by
Degas.
