Quality of Light
Back to lighting
We spoke of the importance of value in
creating effective lighting in a painting. The
other element of lighting is what I will call the
'quality' of the light.

This mostly has to do with the colour of the
light. Late afternoon on a sunny day, the
shadows are long and the light
has a warm cast to it. These are the lighting
conditions most favoured by painters and
photographers.

Be careful however not to  restrict your
material to this type of lighting. Your work
may become mechanical or clichéd.
Overcast or flat overhead lighting can offer
many exciting opportunities. Local colour,
for instance, often appears more brilliant
under these conditions.
